If you’ve seen “ArtCraft” all over your timeline this month, you’re not alone. In the first two weeks of October 2026 the ArtCraft team released a run of open-source desktop apps that look and feel like Adobe Creative Cloud and Microsoft Office. They’re free and written from scratch in Rust. PhotoCraft alone passed 50,000 GitHub stars within days.
This guide explains what ArtCraft actually is, what’s in the suite, who’s behind it, and how to try every app without installing anything.
ArtCraft in one paragraph
ArtCraft is two things under one name:
- ArtCraft the app. The original product is an “IDE for artists”: a desktop studio for AI image and video creation. You compose in 2D, stage scenes in 3D, pose characters and choose from dozens of image and video models.
- The Crafting Apps. A family of standalone, open-source creative and office tools. Each one is a clean-room reimplementation of a well-known professional app, and each one is named “somethingCraft”.
Most of the recent search interest (“artcraft software”, “artcraft suite”, “artcraft adobe”) is about the second part, the Crafting Apps, so that’s what this site focuses on.
The 13 Crafting Apps
| ArtCraft app | What it’s for | Closest incumbent |
|---|---|---|
| PhotoCraft | Image editing, layers, masks, PSD | Adobe Photoshop |
| VectorCraft | Vector illustration | Adobe Illustrator |
| FilmCraft | Video editing, color and sound | Adobe Premiere Pro |
| LightCraft | Photo library and RAW development | Adobe Lightroom |
| PdfCraft | Reading, organizing and protecting PDFs | Adobe Acrobat |
| EffectCraft | Motion graphics and visual effects | Adobe After Effects |
| DesignCraft | Page layout and publishing | Adobe InDesign |
| WordCraft | Word processing | Microsoft Word |
| GridCraft | Spreadsheets | Microsoft Excel |
| DeckCraft | Presentations | Microsoft PowerPoint |
| SoundCraft | Recording, editing and mixing audio | Avid Pro Tools |
| CADCraft | 2D CAD and drafting | Autodesk AutoCAD |
| FigCraft | UI design and prototyping | Figma |
The first seven are the original “Crafting Apps” lineup on the official site. The Office trio, SoundCraft, CADCraft and FigCraft followed within days.
What makes the suite different
Clean-room, pure Rust. None of the apps use Adobe’s or Microsoft’s code. They reproduce the workflow: the same menus, panels, tools and keyboard shortcuts. Under the hood the code is new. FilmCraft’s H.264, HEVC and ProRes codecs, PhotoCraft’s PSD reader and LightCraft’s RAW decoders are written in Rust from public specifications. There’s no Electron and no web view.
Native and in the browser. Every release ships signed installers for Windows (x64, x86 and ARM64), a universal macOS app, Linux AppImage, deb, rpm and Flatpak, FreeBSD, and a WebAssembly build. That last one is why you can open PhotoCraft in your browser right now.
Your files stay yours. No account, no subscription, no telemetry. PSD, DOCX, XLSX, PPTX, IDML, DXF, DWG, SVG and PDF are supported to varying degrees, so you’re not locked into a new format.
Built for AI agents. Every button in every app is a named command. That makes the apps scriptable from a CLI, a JSON control channel or an MCP server, so tools like Claude Code can open a PSD, add an adjustment layer and export a PNG the same way you would.
Who makes ArtCraft?
ArtCraft was founded by engineer and filmmaker Brandon Thomas (GitHub: echelon), previously the founder of
Storyteller.ai and FakeYou. The code lives in the storytold organization on GitHub,
and the official website is getartcraft.com. PhotoCraft alone already lists more than 270 contributors who have sent
pull requests. Licensing is permissive: MIT OR Apache-2.0 for the apps. The ArtCraft name and logos are
trademarks and are not open source.
Is it really a Photoshop (or Office) replacement?
Not yet, and the team says so itself. Each repo publishes an honest maturity estimate:
- PhotoCraft is “early alpha”: much of Photoshop’s surface exists, but not generative fill or plug-in support.
- VectorCraft estimates roughly 65% readiness for real illustration work.
- FilmCraft puts itself at about 56% of the way to replacing Premiere on real projects.
- DeckCraft covers about 79% of PowerPoint’s features by breadth, and WordCraft about 88% of Word’s ribbon commands.
For hobby work, quick edits, opening a PSD on Linux, or anyone who refuses to pay a subscription, they’re already useful. For a studio pipeline, treat them as fast-moving alphas.
How to try ArtCraft

- Download. Use the official download links, which go only to GitHub releases and getartcraft.com. Read how to download PhotoCraft safely first, because fake “ArtCraft” repos are already circulating.
